End Brutal Blunt-Force Trauma and Painful Mutilations for Sheep

Target: Ryder Lee, Chair of the National Farm Animal Care Council, Canada

Goal: Implement mandatory pain relief for sheep and ban inhumane practices such as blunt-force trauma in the sheep farming industry.

Modern sheep farming in Canada subjects countless sheep and lambs to harsh conditions and cruel practices, raising serious concerns about animal welfare. The NFACC Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep permits severe methods that inflict pain, including the killing of lambs through brutal blunt-force trauma, often involving hammer strikes or slamming them against hard surfaces. Additionally, many sheep reportedly endure long periods of confinement on unsanitary slatted floors, suffer from lack of food and water during transport, and face painful procedures like tail docking and castration without any pain relief.

Reports describe the violence of the shearing process, where shearers, incentivized by the volume of wool removed, hurriedly handle sheep, often resulting in deep, bloody injuries. Young lambs are apparently subjected to distressing mutilations without relief from pain, a practice allowed under the current NFACC standards.

To ensure the humane treatment of sheep, it is imperative the NFACC adopts and implements regulations that include mandatory pain relief for painful procedures, improved living conditions, and a ban on inhumane killing methods. Immediate action is necessary to bring Canadian agricultural practices in line with modern standards that prioritize the well-being of animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lee,

Canada’s sheep farming practices are alarmingly lacking in legal protections for animal welfare, leaving sheep and lambs vulnerable to brutal treatment and suffering. As reported, the current NFACC Code permits intolerable practices like killing lambs through blunt-force trauma, the physical stress of rough shearing, and painful mutilations performed without pain relief. This shocking state of affairs raises urgent questions about the moral responsibility of those governing the treatment of these sentient beings.

This petition formally demands that the NFACC revise its Code of Practice to include mandatory pain relief for sheep undergoing painful procedures, establish humane housing standards, and ban inhumane killing methods such as manual blunt-force trauma. The time for change is now—and sheep in Canada deserve better.

Sincerely,
