Save Workers’ Hard-Earned Social Security Benefits

Target: John Thune, U.S. Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Make prevention of Social Security cuts a top priority.

The earned benefits that millions of working Americans are counting on during their retirement years will run out of reserve money in under a decade, according to alarming new forecasts. If Social Security reserves become dry by 2032, as predicted, recipients stand to lose at least 500 dollars a month – or roughly 20 percent – of their benefits. These expected cuts would put Americans in their golden years under even more crushing economic strain.

Several bipartisan proposals have been floated to begin addressing this looming crisis immediately, including the formation of commissions that would be focused on compromises and potential solutions. A similar effort was launched during the 1980s, when the reserves had mere weeks left before they ran out. Meaningful reforms were made then, and they should begin now. But time and again, the nation’s leaders ignore the problem or, worse yet, claim that no problem exists because the government can just keep adding onto its gargantuan debt, which is creating its own set of massive future problems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Thune,

Economic experts have warned of a Social Security cliff for years, and that future is fast approaching. By accounts, it could arrive in under six years. Pretending this inevitability does not exist or leaving it as a mess for others to clean up benefits no one. Confront this crisis and put your full support behind colleagues who have advocated for an immediate planning commission and a truly bipartisan plan of action.

Congress’ duty and its legacy should be service to the people, all of whom deserve much more than last-minute and haphazard patch-up jobs.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
