Goal: Support conservation of habitat instrumental to bald eagle mates.
America’s most famous bald eagles have endured a challenging time recently. Long-time mates Jackie and Shadow of Big Bear Valley (the stars of a famed eagle cam viewed by millions) were separated after female Jackie reportedly got into a fight with two younger eagles, leaving her injured. While her mate Shadow tends to the pair’s most current nest of eaglets, Jackie has been recovering at a raptor rehabilitation facility.
Jackie and Shadow have long confronted the threat of habitat loss as well — one of many dangers to bald eagles — as outlined in this ForceChange petition. For years, advocates and community residents have fought against a planned massive development near the mates’ eagle nest. If enacted, the development could have seriously disturbed the nesting process and upended an ecosystem that includes flying squirrels and a rare plant native to the region. But following a fundraising effort that secured more than 10 million dollars (including a massive contribution from the president of OpenAI), the land will now be purchased for conservation rather than exploitation.
