Target: David Steiner: U.S. Postmaster
Goal: Abandon plans to mandate voter information from state-run elections.
In a rare bipartisan move, Congressional republicans and democrats came together in overwhelming numbers to pass a new bill expected to make housing more affordable for millions of Americans. But the moment of unity was quickly eradicated after the president refused to sign the bill into law. President Trump called off the signing ceremony not because he had issues with the housing bill, which he had promoted, but because Congress (including his own party) has refused to act on his attempts to seize greater control of federal elections. As this drama was playing out, the United States Postal Service (USPS) and its postmaster – appointed by the president – added fuel to the fire.
The supposed states’ rights president and his allies have long sought to compile a surveillance list of every voter in America. In a move against the true targets of his ire – individuals who vote by mail (a list that would include the president himself) – the USPS proposed that each state should submit to it the name and address of every voter planning to vote by mail, along with barcodes subject to “review” and dismissal. States that have universal mail-in voting would therefore be required to hand over information on all voters in the state. If a state refuses to complete this burdensome task that is well outside the USPS’ authority, then the postmaster has threatened that mail-in ballots will not be delivered to any voter in that state.
Sign the petition below to demand the nation’s mail service stop threatening to suppress the rights of millions of voters.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Postmaster Steiner,
“A disgusting overreach,” “an illegal power grab,” an agent of “chaos and confusion” and “mass disenfranchisement”: these are just a few of the terms legals professionals, attorneys general, and secretaries of state have used to describe the USPS’ threat to deprive millions of voters of their ballots and their rights. Since when is the USPS in the business of deciding who does and does not receive mail? And since when did this institution of and for the people devolve into another political weapon?
Stop the baseless proposal and end this madness now. Stop meddling in elections and the rights of states to run them, and start doing your job of ensuring accessible mail delivery for all Americans.
Sincerely,
