Dogs, Including Terminally Ill Greyhound, Dumped on Roadside: Demand Justice

Target: Steve Reed, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, United Kingdom

Goal: Ensure that whoever abandoned a terminally ill, disabled greyhound and her companion beside a roadside is identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Flick should have been spending her final days surrounded by warmth, comfort, and familiar voices. Instead, the elderly greyhound was abandoned beside a lonely roadside while battling a terminal illness. Her closest companion, Frank, remained by her side until rescuers arrived—but his condition deteriorated so severely that veterinarians could not save him.

According to the RSPCA, Flick was found completely deaf, partially blind, and suffering from an advanced terminal illness after she and Frank were abandoned in an isolated area. The emotional and physical ordeal proved too much for Frank, whose health rapidly declined before veterinarians made the difficult decision to euthanize him to prevent further suffering.

Flick, meanwhile, remains alive and has been placed in the care of animal welfare workers while specialists search for a compassionate end-of-life foster home. Investigators continue reviewing traffic camera footage in an effort to identify the vehicle used to abandon the dogs. No suspect has been identified, and no court has determined that any criminal offense occurred.

Abandoning elderly and medically vulnerable animals should never be viewed as an acceptable alternative to responsible care. Companion animals depend entirely on their guardians, particularly when age and illness leave them unable to fend for themselves. Once identified, holding the person or people responsible accountable would reinforce that this duty of care does not disappear when treatment becomes difficult or expensive.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Reed,

Reports describing the abandonment of the dogs Flick and Frank have deeply disturbed animal lovers across the United Kingdom. A terminally ill, disabled greyhound and her longtime companion were left beside a roadside, where one of them later died after his condition rapidly worsened.

Authorities continue investigating and are examining surveillance footage to identify the vehicle involved. Once a suspect is identified, these findings should be assessed through a thorough review of all available evidence, including witness statements and forensic findings.

Please ensure that this investigation receives every available resource and that, once identified, the individual or individuals responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Elderly and terminally ill animals deserve compassion and dignity—not abandonment during the final chapter of their lives.

Sincerely,
