Goal: Honor promised bans on foie gras and fur imports.
Fine diners may not be aware of the horrific origins of the fancy mousse, pate, or parfait on their plates. Popular foie gras-based French culinary dishes consist of duck or goose liver. But the liver is far from ordinary. It has been fattened and made “tastier” by the force-feeding of the animals from which it is harvested. During the process, a tube is forced down the animal’s throat, where grain is funneled until the animal’s liver swells abnormally large. Then, the liver is taken. The controversial practice has been the subject of bans, but critics believe a wider ban on imported foie gras products is also needed.
Leaders in the United Kingdom had pledged such a ban would surface following the UK’s departure from the European Union (EU). But in order to secure a trade deal with the EU, that pledge has been abandoned. New animal welfare proposals made no mention of a foie gras import ban. Moreover, politicians also walked back a promise to ban imports of fur, despite nearly unanimous public support for the ban.

Dear Secretary Eagle,
Much was made of the greater freedom the United Kingdom would enjoy in the wake of Brexit. But those boasts and promises appear to be empty when the bottom line enters the equation. For a trade deal and to curry favour with wealthy influencers concerned with losing their “delicacies,” UK leadership has broken pledges to end the imports of fur and of foie gras: the products of some of the most notorious forms of animal cruelty on the planet. Dropping the fur import ban is especially egregious because by all accounts the UK people have categorically rejected this industry.
Please reconsider where your allegiance lies. Fulfill your promises to the people and champion stronger animal welfare standards.
