Preserve Tallgrass Prairies to Protect the Greater Prairie Chicken

Target: Emerick Cross, Commissioner of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism

Goal: Implement robust conservation measures to protect tallgrass prairie ecosystems.

Kansas’ tallgrass prairie ecosystems are a national treasure, teeming with biodiversity and offering vital ecological services. These vast expanses of native grasses provide essential habitat for wildlife, act as carbon sinks, and safeguard against soil erosion. However, this unique landscape faces imminent threats from land development, agriculture expansion, and climate change.

The tallgrass prairie once stretched across millions of acres, but today, less than 4% remains. This precious ecosystem is disappearing at an alarming rate, endangering species like the greater prairie chicken and monarch butterfly, both of which rely on the tallgrass prairie for their survival. Moreover, the destruction of these prairies contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.

Sign the petition below to demand comprehensive conservation efforts that ensure the survival of Kansas’ tallgrass prairie ecosystems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Cross,

The tallgrass prairie ecosystems of Kansas are a national treasure, rich in biodiversity and ecological significance. However, the relentless march of development, agriculture, and climate change threatens to erase this vital landscape from our collective heritage.

We implore you to take immediate and decisive action to protect and conserve these invaluable ecosystems. This includes expanding protected areas, promoting sustainable land management practices, and supporting research and education efforts to raise awareness about the tallgrass prairie’s importance.

By safeguarding the tallgrass prairie, we not only protect the unique flora and fauna that call it home, but also contribute to the fight against climate change and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Sincerely,
