Stop Reportedly Torturing Pigeons in Crime-Ridden Racing Industry

Target: Mr. Lin Yu-chang, Minister of the Interior, Taiwan

Goal: Ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations of animal cruelty and organized crime within the pigeon racing scene and enforce stronger animal welfare regulations.

The Taiwan Bird Rescue Association has brought to light a deeply concerning situation within Taiwan’s pigeon racing scene, with allegations that this industry is plagued by animal cruelty and organized crime. Recent arrests made by Tainan authorities exposed a group that allegedly kidnapped racing pigeons for ransom, shedding light on the deplorable practices associated with this sport.

The average lifespan of a pigeon is 15 years, and in the West, 10-year-old racing pigeons are not uncommon. However, in Taiwan’s racing scene, birds less than one year old are subjected to grueling 320 km races, raising serious concerns about the welfare of these young animals.

The Taiwan Bird Rescue Association further reports that less than 5 percent of racing pigeons return home in an average season, painting a bleak picture of the physical toll these races take on the birds. These practices have garnered international notoriety, with the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals producing a documentary that has drawn attention to Taiwan’s pigeon racing scene.

The association receives approximately 13 reports per month regarding race pigeons in need of rescue, accounting for 40 percent of all the rescue cases it handles. Many of these incidents involve abandoned pigeons that have had their wings and feet mutilated to prevent them from finding their way home. In some cases, older pigeons are killed and discarded or consumed.

It is imperative that a thorough investigation is conducted to uncover the full extent of animal cruelty and organized crime within Taiwan’s pigeon racing scene. The individuals involved in these criminal activities must be held accountable for their actions and face appropriate legal consequences. Demand action now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lin Yu-chang,

We call upon you to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted into disturbing allegations of animal cruelty in the pigeon racing industry. It is crucial that all resources and necessary measures are allocated to identify the culprits responsible for these acts and the associated organized crime. These individuals must be brought to justice and face the full extent of legal consequences for their actions.

Furthermore, we urge you to enforce stronger animal welfare regulations within Taiwan’s pigeon racing scene. These regulations should include stringent oversight of race conditions, age restrictions for participating birds, and increased penalties for those found guilty of animal cruelty. By implementing these measures, Taiwan can send a clear message that the well-being of animals is a priority and that acts of cruelty will not be tolerated.

The deplorable practices within Taiwan’s pigeon racing scene have brought significant negative attention to the nation. By taking decisive action, you have an opportunity to rectify this situation, ensuring that Taiwan becomes a beacon of animal welfare, compassion, and ethical treatment.

Sincerely,
