Hundreds of Chickens Apparently Left to Suffocate to Death: Seek Justice

Target: Frédéric Teillet, Public Prosecutor, Rennes Judicial Court, Rennes, France

Goal: Pursue all lawful penalties if the evidence supports allegations that more than eight hundred chickens were transported in dangerously overcrowded conditions, causing mass suffering and death.

Authorities opened a criminal investigation after emergency calls from passing motorists prompted the interception of a commercial poultry transport vehicle. According to official reports, French gendarmerie officers stopped the truck at a highway inspection checkpoint after concerns were raised about the welfare of the animals being transported.

Officers reportedly discovered more than eight hundred broiler chickens confined inside damaged plastic crates that provided inadequate ventilation during prolonged transport in high temperatures. The journey had apparently continued for more than eighteen hours without sufficient access to water, shade, or proper airflow. Veterinary inspectors reportedly determined that nearly one-third of the birds had already died from heat exhaustion and asphyxiation before the vehicle was stopped. The transport operator and a logistics manager have been detained for questioning, with investigators alleging that they may have systematically overloaded transport vehicles. No court has determined criminal liability and no penalties have been imposed.

These allegations against the detained individuals remain unproven and must ultimately be resolved through the judicial process. However, if the evidence establishes that the suspects’ commercial decisions subjected hundreds of animals to preventable suffering in pursuit of profit, meaningful punishment would be appropriate. Strong enforcement is essential to prevent these types of tragedies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prosecutor Teillet,

Reports surrounding this investigation have generated widespread concern among animal welfare advocates. Authorities intercepted a poultry transport vehicle after receiving emergency complaints about conditions that investigators considered deeply alarming.

Hundreds of chickens reportedly endured prolonged transport without adequate ventilation, hydration, or protection from extreme temperatures, resulting in extensive fatalities. Investigators alleged that the detained transport operator and logistics manager may have been responsible for those conditions. Those allegations remain subject to judicial determination and should be evaluated through due process.

Please ensure that this investigation receives every available prosecutorial resource and that, if the evidence ultimately supports the allegations, all lawful penalties are pursued. If investigators establish that these animals endured preventable suffering through unlawful transport practices, appropriate accountability should follow under French law.

Sincerely,
