Justice for Pigs Who Froze to Death While Being Transported Under Subzero Conditions

Target: Josh Kaul, Wisconsin Attorney General

Goal: Hold transportation operators accountable for the inhumane treatment of animals during transit leading to deaths and suffering.

A recent ruling in Clark County, Wisconsin, marks a critical moment in animal welfare, as it reveals the systemic cruelty prevalent in the meat industry. Jerith Dville Kane Ellis was found guilty of transporting pigs under harrowing conditions in extreme cold, resulting in the deaths of several animals. During the trek from South Dakota to a Wisconsin slaughterhouse—encompassing a staggering 432 miles—15 pigs suffered horrific fates, with many freezing and enduring frostbite due to temperatures dropping to a shocking –27°F in wind chill, and arriving at a punishing –4°F at their destination.

The gruesome details uncovered by this case are distressing. A USDA inspector documented that 7 pigs perished during the transport, while 5 others were so severely affected that they needed to be euthanized upon arrival. Tragically, 3 more pigs died shortly after being unloaded, and numerous survivors faced extensive frostbite. This incident illustrates a dire trend within the industry, where over 1 million pigs die in transport each year, and many tens of thousands arrive at slaughterhouses injured and suffering, subjected to conditions that reflect a blatant disregard for their welfare.

Demanding justice and accountability is essential to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future. The heinous treatment of these animals under the guise of production must not be tolerated. Immediate steps need to be taken to ensure that all transportation operators adhere to humane standards and face appropriate consequences for any acts of cruelty. It is imperative that the Wisconsin Attorney General takes action to establish strict regulations and enforce penalties to protect animals from similar fates.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear AG Kaul,

The recent case involving Jerith Dville Kane Ellis highlights a disturbing trend in the treatment of animals destined for slaughter. The heinous conditions in which pigs were transported led to their deaths and extreme suffering, with reports detailing how many were left to freeze in subzero temperatures during a lengthy transit. The documented outcome included losses of life, as 7 pigs died in transit, while 5 others needed to be euthanized and 3 more passed shortly after unloading. Additionally, surviving pigs suffered from extensive frostbite as a result of these cruel conditions.

The reality is that the systemic cruelty in the meat industry is a deeply rooted issue, evidenced by the suffering of countless animals during transport. More than 1 million pigs die each year in transit, and it is imperative that this pattern of negligence and abuse is fully addressed. Appropriate penalties must be enforced to ensure that transportation operators uphold humane treatment standards, preventing other animals from enduring similar horrors.

It is the responsibility of your office to advocate for change and enforce accountability in this troubling industry. We urge you to take decisive action against those who engage in inhumane practices, ensuring justice for these animals and setting a precedent for humane treatment in the future.

Sincerely,
