Protect Salmon and Bald Eagles From Copper Mine

Target: Mike Dunleavy, Governor of Alaska

Goal: Preserve important habitat for salmon and bald eagles and do not give go-ahead to copper mining.

The Chilkat River of Alaska is an ecological wonder. This waterway hosts a salmon population that has sustained communities like the town of Haines for decades. The river is also home to the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve: the biggest gathering place for bald eagles on the entire planet. Now, this burgeoning population (numbering up to 4,000 individual birds) is under renewed threat.

A copper mining company was recently given the green light to “explore” copper extraction in the region. If this project goes forward, it could create toxic runoff that pollutes the river, kills salmon, and kills an important way of life for nearby human populations. And the domino effect on the bald eagles that depend on salmon for sustenance could be equally catastrophic.

Sign the petition below to urge Alaskan leaders to rethink a plan that could seriously damage the state economically and environmentally.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Dunleavy,

Native Alaskans living in the proximity of the Chilkat River have the most direct knowledge of this region and its value. They have reported already-dwindling salmon populations. These fish provide an economic boon to communities with a deep fishing heritage, and they maintain this part of the state’s distinction as a world-leading ecological mecca for beautiful bald eagles.

The proposed copper mining project you are considering would put the economic and environmental benefits of this region under direct threat. Mining has already strongly contributed to contamination in nearly half of America’s rivers. Do not let this latest proposal become the next ecological disaster. Keep mining special interests away from this irreplaceable haven.

Sincerely,

Human greed – to hell with the animals and bird life. This cannot happen

It is maddening when progress threatens the existence of God’s creatures with little or NO regard. The good Lord is looking down on every decision.

A copper mine in the Chilkat River district would only destroy all the environmental benefits of the region. This would only further increase the irreversible ecological footprint of man in an already fragile planet!

Please look at the footprint damage and not the money intake!

STOP DRILLING FOR ALL TYPES STUFF AND LEAVE THE ENVIRONMENT ALONG FOR SALMON, BALD EAGLES, AND ALL OTHER SNIMALS TOO IMMEDIATELY!!!! WE DON’T NEED ANYMORE MINES OF ANY TYPES!!!! STOP DRILLING!!!!

Please protect and preserve all these ecological mecca havens before there is no sanctuaries left for salmon, bald eagles and all other creatures.

You cannot and must not RUN EVERYTHING INTO THE GROUND!!!!

  8. Enough business interests. It seems as though that is all there is in the USA. We everyday Americans have a right to object to all this selling or giving land away to foreign countries and companies. Rent the land, do not sell. In order to make a system of life that will carry us through the next 100 years, we must begin to recognize the right of the people to have a say in what mines can be tolerated. What harm comes to our wildlife? People are protected when animals are protected. When resect is given for life the living are always in safe hands. Politicians do not know enough to be guardians of the future. They know how to take support for favors. That’s it! We can do better!

  9. Greed. The Earth’s worst enemy.

  10. Stop raping the planet, destroying habitat and screwing over indigenous people

I wonder how much the copper mining company paid in bribes to ensure that they got their mining licenses? Because money ALWAYS talks…… And the natural environment and the indigenous people ALWAYS lose out.
