Stop Toxic Nitrogen Runoff From Causing Ocean “Dead Zones”

Target: Secretary Tom Vilsack, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Goal: Promote sustainable agriculture practices, minimizing nitrogen runoff and its devastating environmental consequences.

Nitrogen runoff from agricultural activities is causing profound harm to the ecosystems. Elevated nitrogen levels in water bodies lead to oxygen depletion, creating dead zones where aquatic life cannot thrive. This devastating consequence reverberates throughout the food chain, endangering not only aquatic species, but also the livelihoods of countless communities.

Current agricultural practices, including excessive fertilizer use and improper manure management, contribute significantly to nitrogen runoff. Despite knowing the dire environmental consequences, regulations and enforcement remain inadequate, allowing this issue to persist unchecked.

Sign the petition below to demand that the USDA take immediate action to curb nitrogen runoff by imposing strict regulations and enforcing sustainable agriculture practices.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Tom Vilsack,

The ecological damage wrought by nitrogen runoff from agriculture is undeniable. This issue threatens the very balance of the aquatic ecosystems and the communities dependent on them. It is imperative that we prioritize the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices to mitigate nitrogen runoff’s catastrophic consequences.

We implore you to implement and rigorously enforce regulations that compel farmers to reduce fertilizer use, adopt precision agriculture techniques, and enhance manure management practices. Furthermore, invest in education and incentives to encourage farmers to embrace sustainable alternatives.

The time for decisive action is now. The vitality of water bodies, the biodiversity they support, and the livelihoods of countless individuals hang in the balance. We urge you to lead the charge in safeguarding the environment and future generations.

Sincerely,
