He was confined inside an isolated room where the floor was heavily strewn with feces, with no access to water or nutrition. A council veterinary professional determined that the dog was experiencing active suffering before authorities removed him.
Jason Gallagher and Aleshia McLaverty subsequently pleaded guilty in Antrim Magistrates’ Court. Gallagher admitted failing to ensure the dog’s basic welfare needs, while McLaverty admitted causing unnecessary suffering. Gallagher received a two-month custodial sentence suspended for two years. The court also disqualified both individuals from owning, keeping, or exercising control over animals for five years.
The priority now is preventing another animal from suffering while the disqualification orders remain active. A prohibition offers meaningful protection only when authorities respond effectively to potential violations. The five-year bans should therefore be strictly enforced, with any suspected breach promptly investigated and appropriate action taken when supported by evidence.
