Stop Poisoning Water With Harmful Expansion of Uranium Mining

Target: Ms. Kimberly D. Shelley, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality

Goal: Stop the expansion of uranium mining operations that pose a severe risk to Utah’s fragile ecosystems and natural resources.

The pristine beauty and ecological diversity of Utah’s landscapes are under grave threat due to the proposed expansion of uranium mining operations. This expansion not only endangers the health of the environment, but also jeopardizes the health and well-being of local communities. The potential consequences of this expansion are dire, including water contamination, soil degradation, and irreparable damage to vital habitats.

Uranium mining carries the risk of toxic heavy metal leaching into groundwater and water bodies, causing lasting harm to aquatic life and the health of those who rely on these resources. Furthermore, the mining process itself disrupts the delicate balance of ecosystems and poses a direct threat to vulnerable species that call Utah home. The expansion plans lack a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, disregarding the long-term consequences for the state’s unique biodiversity.

Sign the petition below to demand an immediate cessation of the proposed expansion of uranium mining operations, and to insist on thorough environmental impact assessments to protect Utah’s ecosystems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Shelley,

The natural beauty of Utah’s landscapes and the diversity of its ecosystems are treasures we must preserve for generations to come. We are deeply concerned about the potential devastation that the proposed expansion of uranium mining operations could bring to the environment and communities.

Uranium mining operations have a history of leaving irreversible scars on delicate ecosystems, endangering water sources, and posing health risks to both wildlife and human residents. The absence of a comprehensive environmental impact assessment raises alarming red flags, indicating a lack of regard for the long-term well-being of the state.

We implore you to prioritize the health of the ecosystems and the welfare of the communities over short-term economic gains. Please halt the expansion of uranium mining operations until a thorough and independent environmental assessment is conducted, ensuring that the state’s natural treasures remain intact.

Sincerely,
