Success: India’s Cities Must Address Air Pollution

Target: Tedros Adhanom, Director General of the World Health Organization

Goal: Praise World Health Organization for encouraging crackdown on India’s air pollution.

India’s supreme court has declared that state governments will be held accountable for the country’s lethal levels of air pollution. Governments will be given six weeks to either begin providing clean air to their citizens, or financially compensate them for years of health risks.

“We have become a laughing stock,” states justice Arun Mishra of the country’s inability to provide clean air for its citizens. Areas such as Delhi are overcome with smog due to excessive crop burning. Factories release thousands of toxins into the air every day. It is dangerous to simply breathe outdoors, with people wearing face masks just to avoid inhaling these toxins. Petitions such as this one have circulated, demanding cleaner air.

This is entirely the decision of the judges, but it could not have been made possible without a strong push from the World Health Organization. Sign this petition to thank WHO for fighting long and hard for cleaner air across India.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director General Adhanom,

India’s supreme court is finally pushing back against the country’s air pollution crisis, demanding governments either provide clean air for their citizens or financially compensate them for the years of suffering and health risks. For years, places such as Delhi have been overcome with smog from burning crops and toxic chemicals from factories, causing many a health hazard. People have been forced to wear face masks outdoors.

Thank you for fighting so long and so hard to make this decision possible. India’s court may have made the decision, but it is because you never stopped pushing for cleaner air worldwide that they have come to it, realizing the error in allowing the problem to increase. We appreciate your efforts, and we thank you for making such an impact.

Sincerely,

Why wait so long! It did not happen over night. It is much too late because the pollution from other countries such as China ad to the overall picture of the globe!

Countries should not wait until they choke!
