72 Animals Allegedly Packed Among Feces and Urine: Prosecute Cruelty

Target: James Montoya, District Attorney, 34th Judicial District, Texas

Goal: Pursue substantial penalties upon conviction for allegedly transporting 72 animals in cramped, filthy containers without accessible food or water.

Fifty-six tortoises. Eleven hedgehogs. Two kinkajous, two guinea pigs, and a caracal. Deputies say they recovered 72 animals from a vehicle during a traffic stop, confined in containers that restricted movement while feces and urine accumulated around them.

According to the sheriff’s office, the conditions included inadequate ventilation and inaccessible food and water. Kelli Pinnock was arrested on five animal cruelty counts. All 72 animals were voluntarily surrendered and transferred for care.

Different species require different accommodations, but humane treatment is essential for every animal. Demand a determined prosecution of supported charges, substantial penalties upon conviction, and lawful restrictions that prevent any proven cruelty from recurring.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear District Attorney Montoya,

Please ensure the case of dozens of wild exotic animals reportedly rescued from inhumane conditions in a vehicle receive a rigorous prosecutorial response. The reported combination of restricted movement, accumulated excrement, poor ventilation, and unavailable sustenance warrants individual attention to all 72 animals. A count of seized animals alone cannot convey the condition of a tortoise, hedgehog, or wild cat requiring specialized care.

Work with the appropriate prosecuting authorities and veterinary specialists to establish the severity and duration of any unlawful deprivation. Examine transport arrangements, container dimensions, and access to food, water, and fresh air. Any additional wildlife offenses should be pursued only where evidence supports them.

Upon conviction, seek penalties proportionate to the suffering established, together with any authorized restrictions on animal custody or transportation. We ask your office to make the animals’ welfare central to its sentencing position and to coordinate with their caregivers throughout proceedings. Their surrender creates an opportunity for safer lives; a thorough prosecution can establish responsibility for any unlawful treatment that preceded it.

Sincerely,
