Eight-Month-Old Puppy Allegedly Severely Malnourished: Seek Meaningful Punishment

Target: Mary Pat Donnelly, District Attorney, Rensselaer County, New York

Goal: Pursue meaningful punishment upon conviction for allegedly depriving an eight-month-old puppy of proper sustenance until urgent veterinary care was needed.

Eight months old is an age for growing, playing, and learning to trust for a puppy. Sage, a pit bull mix, allegedly reached that age severely underweight and in need of urgent veterinary treatment. The young dog’s reported condition makes this case painfully concrete: proper nourishment is a daily responsibility, not an optional kindness.

Deahvion Nobles faces a charge of failing to provide proper sustenance following an animal control investigation. Sage received veterinary care and remains with animal control. The prosecution must establish what caused the puppy’s condition and whether the accused unlawfully failed to meet the animal’s needs.

A puppy cannot choose another caregiver or explain a worsening illness. That dependence gives people an obligation to act before suffering becomes an emergency. Support a focused prosecution, a meaningful sentence if guilt is proved, and lawful protections that give Sage the prospect of a stable, healthy future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear District Attorney Donnelly,

Please thoroughly examine the allegation against Deahvion Nobles that an eight-month-old dog was deprived of adequate sustenance and became severely underweight. We ask you to ensure that the veterinary findings receive full consideration and that any established neglect is addressed with appropriate seriousness.

Determine how long the reported condition developed, what food and treatment were available, and whether illness or other factors contributed. Evidence about the caregiver’s knowledge and response should inform the prosecution. Meanwhile, Sage’s nutrition, recovery, and eventual placement deserve continuing attention. Necessary treatment and decisions about Sage’s future should receive sustained attention throughout the criminal proceedings.

Upon conviction, seek penalties that reflect the suffering proved and any authorized restrictions needed to protect animals from a demonstrated risk of recurrence. Consider whether continued animal ownership would be appropriate under the findings and applicable law. We ask for a resolution that takes the alleged deprivation seriously, supports responsible long-term care for Sage, and makes clear that meeting a dependent animal’s essential needs is an enforceable duty.

Sincerely,
