Hyenas and Dog Killed by Poisoned Meat: Find Those Responsible

Target: Erustus Kanga, Director General, Kenya Wildlife Service

Goal: Investigate the reported poisoning of two hyenas and a dog, remove confirmed hazards, and refer supported criminal charges for prosecution.

Two spotted hyenas and a domestic dog died near a watering hole after suspected exposure to poisoned meat. Raw goat meat containing an agricultural pesticide was recovered nearby. Suspected poisoned bait threatens animals sharing the park boundary.

The deaths require laboratory examination and a reconstruction of events. Investigators should compare samples from the animals and suspected bait, then assess whether the evidence supports intentional poisoning rather than another cause of death or contamination.

Protection and accountability must proceed together. Any confirmed hazard needs safe containment, while evidence must remain available for a criminal investigation. Demand a coordinated inquiry, identification of anyone responsible, and prosecution wherever deliberate wildlife poisoning or other cruelty is proved.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director General Kanga,

Please investigate the deaths of the two hyenas and the dog with appropriate veterinary and forensic support. We ask that the pesticide-laced goat meat be examined alongside the carcasses and the circumstances of their discovery. Establishing the cause of death is essential before drawing conclusions about motive, intent, or responsibility.

Preserve samples and their handling records, interview people with relevant observations, and examine available information about access to the site. If testing identifies a chemical, pursue lawful inquiries into its distribution where evidence supports that step. Work with police, environmental specialists, and local communities to secure any remaining dangerous material and provide accurate information about confirmed risks to animals.

Where the evidence identifies an offender, refer a case to the competent prosecuting authorities and support penalties proportionate to the conduct proved. Please also coordinate the investigation of the domestic dog’s death with the appropriate agencies. We seek a response that treats each animal’s reported loss seriously and prevents further exposure without prejudging an unidentified suspect. Follow the scientific evidence, keep community reporting channels accessible, and maintain investigative attention until the available leads have been properly examined.

Sincerely,
