Cat Allegedly Left to Die in City Trap: Take Action

Target: Diana Moers, County Prosecutor for Vanderburgh, Indiana

Goal: Oppose dismissal and pursue full accountability after a cat was allegedly left to die trapped inside a city-owned device.

A deeply disturbing case has emerged involving a city animal control officer who was allegedly responsible for setting a live trap inside a vacant residence and then failing to ensure that no animal remained confined inside. According to a probable cause affidavit, a cat was discovered dead inside a baited trap that had been left unattended for an extended period. Investigators reportedly concluded that the incident may have risen to the level of criminal abandonment and neglect.

Court documents state that the officer returned to the property for over a week and captured several cats. After the home was locked, the affidavit alleges that no effort was allegedly made to determine whether a live animal remained inside the trap. Authorities allege that the officer did not contact police, notify a supervisor, or alert a colleague before closing out the run. Months later, a responding officer reportedly found a cat that appeared to have been deceased for a significant period of time inside the trap.

The defendant has reportedly denied wrongdoing. However, when an animal is allegedly left confined in a city-owned trap without monitoring, resulting in a prolonged and preventable death, the integrity of animal protection systems is called into question. Demand full prosecution, if the evidence supports these allegations, to reinforce accountability and to ensure that those entrusted with safeguarding animals are held to the highest standards.

PETITION LETTER:

Prosecutor Diana Moers,

We write to express grave concern regarding reports that a cat was left confined in a baited city-owned trap inside a vacant residence and died after being unattended for an extended period. According to a probable cause affidavit, the trap was allegedly set by an animal control officer who may have failed to verify whether a live animal remained inside after access to the property was restricted.

Investigators have alleged that no supervisor or law enforcement agency was notified before the run was closed, and that the cat was later found deceased after what appeared to be a prolonged period. These allegations, if substantiated, raise serious concerns about oversight and responsibility within animal control operations.

We respectfully urge your office to oppose dismissal and to pursue full prosecution to the fullest extent permitted by law should the evidence substantiate these allegations. Clear and visible accountability is essential to ensure that animals entrusted to public protection are not allegedly subjected to preventable suffering.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
