Target: Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General
Goal: Put an end to scams that deprive veterans of hard-earned benefits.
Veterans should have assistance and recognition not just one day but every day of the year. Veteran benefits ensure that no individual who sacrificed and fought for the country is left behind. Yet an increasing number of unscrupulous bad actors are exploiting this process and swindling veterans out of their benefits.
So-called claim sharks sell veterans on the idea that they are the best and only means of applying for benefits and for securing the best possible benefits. Some sharks even falsely claim they can solidify a veteran’s disabled status. They fail to mention that only the Veterans Administration (VA) has control over such decisions, and they also fail to disclose that the VA offers free assistance services to veterans seeking benefits. Claim sharks, on the other hand, charge fees or demand a portion of the benefits for payment. They may also try to obtain a veteran’s personal, sensitive information.
The Department of Justice can assist swindled veterans after the fact, but the individuals responsible for these deceptive acts too often go undiscovered and unpunished. Sign the petition below to urge the nation’s top legal department to crack down on predators who prey on brave heroes.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Attorney General Garland,
Claim sharks steal untold numbers of benefits from veterans who have already sacrificed so much. Worse, they deprive these heroes of trust. Bringing awareness to scams and helping victims is important. But these measures must be paired with decisive, strong action against offenders.
Please create a strong investigatory framework for identifying and punishing claim sharks and for stopping their deceptive practices before they begin.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
