Don’t Block Free and Fair Elections

Target: Todd Blanche, Acting U.S. Attorney General

Goal: Allow midterm elections to proceed without obstruction or interference.

Efforts are already under way to challenge election results in Alaska ahead of the midterms. The U.S. Department of Justice has also preemptively waded into election day by trying to force California state officials to set aside nearly 20,000 already-cast ballots for “review.” A U.S. district judge unequivocally condemned this effort. But the justice department is seemingly not done with its obstructive efforts just yet.

Attorney General Todd Blanche was recently asked if his department would block states from vote certification. His response: “Of course, I’m not going to say that.” He went on to claim interference would only happen in a “doomsday” scenario, but it is a threat for which state leaders are preparing. To be clear, elections are intended by law to be a state issue, with no intervention from the federal government. The primary responsibility of the justice department, ironically enough, is to ensure voters’ civil rights are not violated.

Sign the petition below to demand the Department of Justice honor its oath and stop this egregious overreach.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Acting Attorney General Blanche,

“Eroded trust in our democracy is irreparable. Once a vote is segregated, lasting harm has occurred. If the Executive can discount votes and threaten an ongoing election due to unproven allegations, then our democracy is in danger. This Court declines to be a party to such process.”

The ruling handed down in the Department of Justice’s attempted meddling in California elections left no doubt as to how far this agency is stepping out of its lane. The U.S. Department of Justice – and the federal branch as a whole – has no legal standing or role in vote certification. Your primary and most important role is to protect the right to vote freely. And your refusal to rule out federal intervention in the upcoming midterms is a direct refutation of that role.

Pledge your allegiance to this mission and do not undermine a critical cornerstone of democracy.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
