Target: John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland
Goal: Invest in methods to enhance green technology and clean energy production.
Green technology does not exist in a vacuum. Everything from wind turbines to electric car motors require rare metals that are often not easily accessible. But an innovative bio-recycling technology could give green tech a needed boost.
The University of Edinburgh is home to a group of scientists who are using a novel method to extract important metals from old electric motors and other eco-friendly devices. Specifically, the scientists have successfully extracted nickel, lithium cobalt, and nickel, with the help of naturally occurring bacteria. Through natural processes, the bacteria latch themselves to the metals and are able to remove the metal substances for use in new green technology.
If perfected, this method could revolutionize green technology and make it more widely available across the world. Sign the petition below to urge investment in this potential game-changer.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Minister Swinney,
Sustainable biotechnology has gained an important new partner in bolstering the drive toward clean energy. A team at the University of Edinburgh has successfully extracted rare metals vital in green technology from old devices previously written off as junk, all with the aid of bacteria. The extracted metals have potentially widespread uses in creating new wind turbines, new electric motors, and many more new facets of clean energy technology.
But the research needs funding so that it can diversify and realize its real-world applications. Please make this investment and help end the world’s dependence on fossil fuels and on nations currently commanding clean energy supplies.
Sincerely,
