Stop Polluting the Mississippi River With Agricultural Toxins

Target: Charlie Melancon, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Goal: Enhance water quality in the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River, an iconic waterway that bisects Louisiana, finds itself in a precarious state. A mélange of pollutants, ranging from industrial effluents to agricultural runoff, has compromised its ecological integrity. This isn’t a mere inconvenience; it’s an urgent predicament necessitating immediate redressal.

Water quality assays reveal disconcerting levels of hazardous substances, including but not limited to heavy metals and microbial pathogens. Aquatic life teeters on the brink of collapse, and the risk of waterborne diseases looms large. Moreover, the river serves as a vital source for both drinking water and local industries, making its contamination a matter of public and economic health.

Sign this petition to exhort the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to take immediate, decisive action for the betterment of water quality in the Mississippi River. Instituting meticulous oversight, clamping down on pollution, and revamping wastewater treatment are non-negotiable for preserving this indispensable watercourse.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Melancon,

The Mississippi River’s deteriorating water standards have reached a critical juncture, one that jeopardizes the well-being of both humans and the environment. The data is irrefutable: elevated levels of pollutants, dwindling fish stocks, and a surge in waterborne maladies.

We can’t afford to delay now. Immediate action is imperative. We request you to roll out a comprehensive plan aimed at restoring the river’s health. This plan must include stringent pollution controls, enhanced wastewater treatment, and robust, ongoing monitoring.

Negligence in this matter will only deepen the crisis, affecting not just the environment but also the economic fabric of the communities. The Mississippi River is more than a body of water; it’s the lifeblood of the state.

We implore you to act with the urgency this crisis warrants. Implement measures that will not only improve water quality, but also ensure the long-term sustainability of the Mississippi River within Louisiana’s borders.

Sincerely,

  1. In the struggle with Climate Change we will face a severe water problem in the near future. Politicians have long taken money from polluters and supported polluters in favor of doing their jobs for the country and our citizens. This must end. The Mississippi is legend but even legends die. The Great Mississippi is showing us this is now here. Salt water invades the fresh water. Fish will die, drinking water will not be available. You know this yet it is kept quiet as the public would be mad as hell, as they should be. Taxpayers paying their fair share of taxes will be at war with special interests, politicians, and polluters of which we have too many. Pay attention now. If you can’t hear the whispers, you will be forced to hear the shouts!
