Stop Reducing Animals to Products With Paint Markings

Target: Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: End the inhumane practice of using paint to label and dehumanize farmed animals in factory farms.

The alarming use of industrial marking paint on the fur and skin of animals in factory farms reflects a troubling system of exploitation and suffering. Workers reportedly use “Livestock Sprays,” “Paint,” or “Markers” to categorize animals such as cows, pigs, goats, and sheep, reducing them to mere products rather than living beings. Particularly distressing is the practice of marking sick or “downed” animals with specific colors, conveniently labeling those deemed unprofitable for slaughter. This method reflects a grim reality where the individual suffering of animals is disregarded for the sake of industrial efficiency.

Moreover, painted markings serve to track breeding cycles and medications in an environment that fosters disease due to extreme confinement. The rampant use of antibiotics is not a symbol of care, but an indicator of systemic failure in animal welfare practices. Animals are subjected to harsh conditions that can require constant medical intervention, revealing a toxic environment that prioritizes profit over their basic dignity. The use of paint during insemination, including tracking cows and mothers prepared for farrowing crates, illustrates the extent of their objectification in this profit-driven industry.

Immediate reform is essential not only to end these practices but also to foster a compassionate society that respects all living beings. By ceasing the use of paint to label animals, the dignity of these creatures can be recognized and upheld, countering the psychological barriers that enable their suffering. This petition demands the elimination of such inhumane practices across factory farms and calls for a shift towards more humane treatment of animals in agricultural systems.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

The time has come to address the distressing practices that occur in factory farms, including the use of industrial marking paint on animals. This paint is used to categorize and identify thousands of animals, subjecting them to dehumanization and suffering for the sake of efficiency. This system allows for the labeling of sick or “downed” animals, who are often targeted for slaughter without consideration for their individual well-being. Such treatment is not only inhumane but starkly highlights the moral implications of prioritizing profit over the lives of sentient beings.

Additionally, the conditions that necessitate the use of antibiotics and other medications expose the inherent flaws within factory farming. Painted markings are used to track breeding cycles, insemination, and animal dispositions in a way that reduces their status to mere inventory. The psychological toll that this practice takes on these creatures and the repeated need for medical interventions suggest a systemic failure in treating these animals with the dignity they deserve.

We demand the immediate cessation of the use of paint to label and dehumanize farmed animals. It is imperative that the Department of Agriculture take action to protect the welfare of these beings and lead a movement towards more ethical farming practices. A future where animals are respected as individuals begins with compassionate reform.

Sincerely,
