Don’t Price Consumers Out of Big Events

Target: Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia

Goal: Block practice that significantly raises prices on tickets during transactions.

Consumers seeking tickets for high-demand events like concerts often expect high prices. They do not typically expect, however, for the price of a ticket to skyrocket in the midst of a transaction. This controversial practice, known as dynamic pricing, is in the crosshairs of consumer advocates.

Ticket-seekers are likely familiar with waiting – sometimes for hours – in an online queue to secure their sought-after purchases. In some cases, the price of the ticket can increase exponentially as the consumer stands in the internet equivalent of a waiting line. By the time the consumer actually makes the purchase, the price paid might have soared hundreds or even thousands of dollars from the time the wait began. Advocates consider this practice deeply deceptive and unfair.

Efforts are currently underway to secure a ban on dynamic pricing in a nation with one of the spottiest consumer protection records. Sign the petition below to compel Australian leaders to take this important step to rectify this ongoing problem.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Albanese,

Many Australian states have scalping laws that safeguard consumers from unfair pricing practices. These laws often cap the limit for a resold ticket to 10 percent above the retail price. Yet a practice that can routinely make consumers pay an exponentially more elevated above-retail price remains largely untouched. Dynamic pricing can and often does take hard-earned money from consumers at a rate far higher than traditional scalping. And this practice is made worse by the fact that it can completely catch the consumer off-guard.

Please heed the reform calls of consumer advocates and take a step toward strengthening Australia’s consumer protection laws. Consider a ban on dynamic pricing.

Sincerely,
