Target: Xavier Becerra, Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Goal: Crack down on beauty treatment providers who are endangering the well-being of clients.
An increasingly popular cosmetic injection procedure is under renewed scrutiny. Three female customers reportedly tested positive for HIV after undergoing treatments at New Mexico’s VIP Spa. A vampire facial had apparently been conducted on each of the women prior to their diagnoses.
The procedure involves drawing a patient’s blood, extracting a substance known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and then reinjecting the plasma into the face. Advocates of vampire facials tout their purported anti-aging and skin rejuvenation benefits. While the process is deemed safe in most cases, like similar cosmetic treatments it can pose a serious risk if unsanitary equipment is used. Investigators had allegedly uncovered several safety violations at the spa in question and had apparently been conducting an investigation of the unlicensed spa for five years. Its former owner had even been sentenced to prison time following a previous case linking the spa to an HIV infection.
Sign the petition below to demand the nation’s leading health agency fight for more oversight over irresponsible beauty treatment centers.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Secretary Becerra,
Counterfeit botox has reportedly sickened individuals with botulism in 11 states. Other recent reports brought light to the alleged infection of up to five New Mexico people with HIV following cosmetic injection treatments at a now-closed spa. Each of these cases demonstrates how a lack of rigorous licensing and regulatory standards for the beauty treatment industry can lead to lifelong consequences for Americans.
Please use your influence to advocate for and enact a more stringent framework of regulation that will help safeguard consumers who just want to improve their appearance.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
