Ensure Offshore Wind Doesn’t Harm Marine Life

Target: Maura Healey, Governor of Massachusetts

Goal: Ensure offshore wind energy projects don’t pose a threat to the fragile marine ecosystems of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts boasts a unique and delicate marine environment that is home to diverse species of marine life and vital to the livelihoods of coastal communities. However, plans for offshore wind energy projects in these waters are causing concern. While renewable energy is essential for combating climate change, current proposals risk causing significant harm to marine ecosystems.

Offshore wind farms can have substantial ecological impacts. If done incorrectly, they may disrupt the migration and breeding patterns of marine species, create noise pollution affecting marine mammals, and damage the seafloor habitat. Such disturbances can have far-reaching consequences, jeopardizing the balance of the oceans and the livelihoods of local fishermen and communities dependent on a healthy marine environment.

It’s crucial to emphasize that renewable energy initiatives are appreciated, but not at the expense of precious marine ecosystems. Offshore wind should be developed in a way that protects the most sensitive areas from harm.

Sign the petition below to demand that the preservation of the marine ecosystems be prioritized when choosing locations for offshore wind projects.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Healey,

We are writing to express our deep concern regarding the approval of offshore wind energy projects in Massachusetts waters. While we appreciate the need for renewable energy sources, it is imperative that we prioritize the preservation of fragile marine ecosystems when siting these projects.

The oceans are not only home to a rich diversity of marine life, but they also play a critical role in supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. Offshore wind projects, if not carefully planned and sited, can disrupt these ecosystems, leading to long-term ecological damage.

We urge you to ensure a rigorous environmental review of any offshore wind projects, and to ensure they are built in a way that does minimal harm to marine environments. Let us demonstrate our commitment to renewable energy in a way that aligns with a common responsibility to protect the natural world that sustains us.

Sincerely,
