Stop Coal Ash Contamination to Safeguard Water Resources

Target: Jeff Cown, Director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD)

Goal: Prevent coal ash from contaminating essential water sources.

Georgia’s pristine waterways and ecosystems are at risk due to the improper disposal of coal ash. This toxic byproduct of coal-fired power plants contains hazardous substances that can leach into groundwater and surface water, posing a grave threat to human health and the environment. Despite the potential consequences, current regulations governing coal ash disposal are inadequate, leaving Georgia’s water resources vulnerable.

The lack of stringent rules has led to practices that endanger water quality. Coal ash ponds, often located near rivers and lakes, risk contaminating these vital water sources. Leakage and seepage from these ponds can introduce heavy metals and pollutants into the environment, endangering aquatic life and the communities that rely on these water bodies.

Sign the petition below to demand the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to implement and enforce stringent regulations on coal ash disposal to protect the state’s water resources and prevent contamination.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Cown,

Water is the lifeblood of the state, nurturing ecosystems, sustaining communities, and providing for people’s well-being. It is with deep concern that we write to urge you to take immediate action to address the mounting threat posed by improper coal ash disposal.

The risks associated with coal ash, laden with harmful toxins, cannot be ignored. The current lack of stringent regulations has allowed for practices that jeopardize water quality and health. Coal ash ponds, situated perilously close to vital water bodies, threaten irreversible damage to the environment. The possibility of heavy metal contamination and pollution endangers aquatic ecosystems and the very fabric of the communities.

We implore you to rise to this challenge and establish robust regulations that ensure proper coal ash disposal, preventing the contamination of Georgia’s water resources. The well-being of the citizens and the integrity of the environment depend on your decisive action.

Sincerely,
