Cut Pollution by Recycling Leftover Pumpkins

Target: Michael S. Regan, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Goal: Reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by recycling pumpkins.

Pumpkins are a festive decoration during fall, but when not disposed of properly, they release an abundance of methane gas–a greenhouse gas 80 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide. It’s also responsible for 25% of the Earth’s global warming based on its ability to trap a large amount of heat in Earth’s atmosphere. When pumpkins are disposed of, they’re typically thrown into landfills, causing them to not break down properly based on them being organic waste. The best way to prevent this is to install recycling centers for leftover pumpkins to be taken to after fall events.

Several states have created pumpkin recycling facilities, but there’s not enough. Most of the population still continues to throw away pumpkins in trash bins, which is incredibly bad for the environment. Outside of bringing pumpkins to recycling facilities, pumpkins can also be donated to local zoos or farm owners. Pumpkins can also be used as compost as an added way to give back to the environment without putting it in danger.

Sign this petition to demand the U.S. government install recycling facilities around the country for pumpkins to be taken to. Pumpkins emit greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, and by being thrown into landfills, they negatively impact the environment. The government needs to take action against this harmful act.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear EPA Administrator Regan,

Pumpkins cannot be thrown into landfills any longer. They emit methane into Earth’s atmosphere, contributing to global warming. If nothing is done to halt this pressing issue, the environment will continue to suffer. New ways to dispose of pumpkins must be provided.

Since pumpkins are organic waste, they can be made into compost or properly recycled. When they are thrown into trash cans, they are unable to decompose naturally. The methane gas they emit is substantially worse than that of carbon emissions. Methane gas contributes to 25% of global warming, and if pumpkins are disposed of correctly, this percentage can decrease.

Create recycling facilities for pumpkins to be brought to. They will be able to properly decompose, and they may even have the opportunity to help the environment if made into compost. They can be donated to farms and/or zoos as well, but they must be recycled for the welfare of the environment. This small change can play a part in saving Earth. Install recycling facilities for pumpkins. I appreciate your attention to this message.

Sincerely,
