Stop Mutilating and Poisoning Millions of Animals for Laboratory Tests

Target: Jayanta “Jay” Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health

Goal: End the cruel and ineffective practice of animal experimentation that causes unimaginable suffering to millions of animals.

Millions of animals are subjected to horrific conditions in laboratories, forced to endure experiments that lead to severe pain, fear, and torment. These sentient beings, including dogs, cats, monkeys, and rabbits, are confined to small cages, injected with harmful chemicals, and subjected to invasive procedures without any chance of escape. Animals are used for tests that include having corrosive substances dripped into their eyes or being strapped into immobilizing devices, all while in a state of distress.

The atrocities of animal experimentation do not just involve moral failures; they represent a significant scientific failure as well. Recent findings show that approximately 95% of drugs deemed safe and effective in these tests fail when applied to humans. This raises serious questions about the validity of animal testing, which has shown to be an unreliable method for predicting human responses to new treatments. Yet, animal testing continues, draining valuable resources that could be redirected towards innovative, humane alternatives such as organ-on-a-chip technology or advanced computational models that respect animal welfare.

There is an urgent need for systemic change in the approach to biomedical research, reflecting a commitment to ethical standards and scientific accuracy. To that end, the petition demands a cessation of the funding and practice of animal experimentation, in favor of advanced methods that prioritize humane treatment while also producing reliable results for human health. The inhumane treatment of animals must be addressed, and the suffering they endure should no longer be tolerated.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Bhattacharya,

The ongoing practice of animal experimentation raises serious ethical and scientific concerns that cannot be ignored. The sentient beings subjected to such cruel treatments are not merely subjects; they are individuals capable of feeling distress, fear, and loneliness. This suffering is a reality that must be confronted and brought to a halt. Moreover, it is critical to highlight that the scientific validity of animal testing is increasingly called into question. With an alarming 95% failure rate of drugs deemed safe in animal trials when applied to human patients, investing in outdated methods is tantamount to wasting resources that could be better utilized in ethical and effective research alternatives. By continuing to finance these inhumane experiments, not only is the suffering of animals perpetuated, but progress toward finding effective treatments for humans is also hindered.

In light of the mounting evidence against animal experimentation and the unacceptability of the suffering inflicted upon these creatures, we implore you to take decisive action. Please end the cruel practice of animal testing and redirect funding towards humane methodologies that respect and protect the welfare of all living beings. A commitment to ethical science is both necessary and overdue.

Sincerely,
