Protect Giraffes From Poachers Before it’s Too Late

Target: Martha Williams, Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Demand giraffes receive vital, population-restoring protections under the Endangered Species Act.

After being sued by animal conservation groups, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has agreed that by November 2024, it will decide whether giraffes qualify for protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). While we applaud the distant effort, the decision to protect giraffes cannot wait another two years. These iconic animals are, like many others across Africa, highly sought after by poachers, who hunt and trap giraffes for their meat, as well as their pelts, bones, hooves, hair, and tails. As giraffes are not federally protected, the import and sale of their parts is still totally legal throughout the U.S. and other countries across the world.

Giraffe populations are already in decline. Wild giraffe populations have shrunk by an estimated 35% in the last three decades alone. Though giraffe populations might not be as low as those of other endangered species, why should we wait until their populations are reduced further? The time is now to act on behalf of giraffes.

Sign this petition to demand the U.S. afford these animals the protection they deserve under the ESA.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Williams,

Over the course of the last three decades, giraffe populations have declined by an estimated 35% worldwide, with multiple subspecies classified as critically endangered. Like many other animals across the African continent, giraffes are subject to extensive poaching, and their hooves, tails, pelts, and bones are legally sold and imported to countries–including the U.S.

While we understand and appreciate your agency’s commitment to reevaluating the giraffe’s EPA status in November of 2024, it doesn’t seem right to wait another two years before deciding to protect these incredible animals. Why not be proactive about the issue instead of waiting until giraffes are at the brink of extinction to act, just as we did with many species of rhinos, elephants, and big cats?

We are asking you, Ms. Williams, to make the decision now to protect giraffe populations before it is too late.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

These are some of the most gentle creatures I’ve ever seen. Someone PLEASE tell me why they have to be killed and butchered???? Why do any of Gods creatures have to be killed for fun, to mount on a wall or to boast to your buddies.

Again….MAKE POACHING OF ANY BEING ILLEGAL! STOP IMPORTING ALL ANIMAL PARTS!! THIS IS ANIMAL CRUELTY AND SHOULD HAVE MAXIMUM CHARGES AND FINES!

GIRAFFES MUST BE PROTECTED under the Endangered Species Act ASAP!!

This EXTREME ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME NEEDS to be STOPPED!!!
Giraffes are the legacy of our entire planet and all people who live here! Giraffes deserve 100% ESA protection.
Poachers are desensitized, dehumanized, greedy and psychopathic scumbags! Each one of them should be put in front of a firing squad!

  7. Erica Ling says:

Seeing this, I almost sympathise with the GEF’s aim to cull 4 billion humans from the planet. Before we are the only species left; boring;destructive;aggressive humans

  8. Instead of low life hunters killing some innocent animal. They should instead be dropped in a remote location and hunt each other. Let’s see if these cowardly murderers are willing to “GO AFTER” something that will shoot back. Hunters hunting each other gunning them down or shooting with an arrow/crossbow without feelings or remorse. I’m pretty sure no one would give a shit if they did. I know I wouldn’t!!!! The winner will be last one standing!!!

  9. Shirley Lemieux says:

I agree that the decision to protect giraffes under the Endangered Species Act cannot wait another two years. Giraffes are such beautiful animals that are hunted down by poachers and that is why they are in need of protection now.

  10. Wendy+Morrison says:

BAN POACHING & KILLING OF ALL GIRAFFES AND KILLING ALL OTHER ANIMALS IMMEDIATELY!!!!!

  11. I DON’T TRUST FWS THEY LOVE TO KILL ANIMALS.

  12. Shoot the poachers and hunters on sight afterall they have no morals when it comes to taking the life of a beautiful living breathing animal.

  13. M. Lee Zucker says:

Writing to protest inadequate protection of giraffes. Mild-mannered, beautiful animals, they deserve at least the same protections extended to some other wild creatures. Making it illegal to import the parts of the animal and giving it Endangered Species protections would be an obvious start.

  14. Agree all comments kill the bastards who do this. Laws need to change. What’s wrong with people and the laws. DO SOMETHING.

  15. How I LOATHE — LOATHE — POACHERS — the depraved cruelty and indifference to Giraffes is heartbreaking — STOP the MONSTERS & hold them accountable — PUNISHMENTS & PENALTIES MUST be SEVERE — the GREEDY IDIOTS will repeat their unconscionable brutality unless we STOP them PERMANENTLY.

Cull these inbred bastards from society & mount thier heads on a fkn wall!
