Success: Mentally Ill Students Gain Access to Clinical Psychologist

Target: Dr. Christopher Browning, Chair of West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group

Goal: Applaud the addition of three full time psychologists in England’s schools to help combat childhood mental illness.

Three additional schools are recruiting full-time clinical psychologists in order to combat childhood mental illness. This comes on the heels of one community college’s measurable decline in anxiety and depression among students. Applaud the expansion of this groundbreaking initiative.

Mildenhall College Academy, Newmarket Academy, and Castle Manor Academy are actively recruiting clinical psychologists. This move, influenced by petitions like this one, will significantly improve student’s access to mental health professionals. The secondary schools will now provide treatment for low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and eating disorders to 4,300 students and 400 staff members as well as several thousand pupils from feeder primary schools. This important step happened in response to an 81% decline in anxiety and depression among students at Thurston Community College after they gained access to a clinical psychologist. Staff also reported less stress and an increase in their ability to cope with workplace pressures.

This important initiative is improving and likely saving the lives of England’s youth. Sign below to thank the WSCCG for funding this initiative and providing support for mentally ill children.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Browning,

Your decision to fund an additional three clinical psychologists in Suffolk schools is giving hope to mentally ill children and young adults. I want to thank you for supporting this important initiative.

“An estimated 40% of adult mental health issues develop before the age of 14, yet only 25-40% of young people receive the right support,” stated Dr. Beth Mosley, Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust’s clinical psychologist at Thurston Community College. Her recruitment has resulted in a drastic drop in anxiety and depression among students and a reported decease in workplace stress among staff. Now, thanks to you, the same support will be available to the 4,300 students and 400 staff members at Mildenhall College Academy, Newmarket Academy, and Castle Manor Academy.

Your investment is going to provide critical support for children and young adults suffering from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and low self-esteem. Thank you for taking this important step in combating mental illness.

Sincerely,
