Success: Special Counsel Appointed to Oversee Russia Investigation

Target: Rod Rosenstein, Deputy Attorney General

Goal: Applaud restoration of Russia inquiry credibility through appointment of Robert Mueller as special prosecutor.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been appointed as special counsel to lead the inquiry into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. His appointment helps restore a measure of credibility to an investigation hampered by partisanship and executive interference. It is thanks to pressure within and outside of D.C., including community petitions like this one on ForceChange, that this much-needed appointment was made.

Mueller is a former prosecutor who served as FBI director under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Over a long career in law enforcement he has earned a sterling reputation for integrity and adherence to the rule of law. This is evidenced by the universal praise his selection garnered from both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. Even more important given the nature of the investigation, is his willingness to stand up to the executive branch. For example, he threatened to resign in 2004 if the Bush Administration reauthorized warrantless wiretapping without alterations. The challenge was successful and he remained in his post.

Investigative independence is critical in the face of an increasingly brazen administration willing to openly conduct what many perceive as obstruction of justice. President Trump cannot directly remove Mueller from the inquiry, and given his reputation, any attempt to impede his efforts will likely be viewed as blatantly political.
