The accused has pleaded not guilty to charges filed under Malaysia’s Animal Welfare Act 2015. If the evidence ultimately establishes that companion animals were deprived of basic necessities and left to endure prolonged suffering, meaningful accountability would be appropriate. Companion animals depend entirely upon responsible human care for survival. Animal welfare laws exist to protect vulnerable animals from preventable neglect and their protections should be fully enforced whenever the evidence justifies prosecution.
