Dogs Allegedly Bred and Sold for Bloody Fights: Seek Meaningful Sentence

Target: Russ Ferguson, United States Attorney, Western District of North Carolina

Goal: Seek a meaningful sentence following a dogfighting guilty plea and pursue supported charges against other participants while protecting the rescued dogs.

A dog’s willingness to keep moving through pain should never become a selling point for a fight. Federal prosecutors describe a breeding and sales operation allegedly supplying dogs for illegal combat. Twenty-five dogs, including puppies, were recovered during searches connected to the case.

Juelz Christopher Daniels pleaded guilty on October 15 to federal charges involving fighting dogs and related advertising. Prosecutors say the case included online sales promotion and kennels used to raise animals for fighting. Charges against a named codefendant remain pending.

The next stage should account for the animals as individuals, with medical and behavioral needs that continue beyond a rescue. Sentencing must rest on admitted or proven conduct and reliable evidence of harm. Urge prosecutors to seek a meaningful sentence, sustain appropriate care arrangements, and pursue all supported remaining charges.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear U.S. Attorney Ferguson,

Please present a sentencing recommendation that reflects the seriousness of Juelz Christopher Daniels’ guilty plea in a dogfighting case. The alleged breeding, conditioning, and sale of dogs for violent contests warrants close attention to each animal’s welfare. We ask that the rescued dogs’ needs remain part of the response as proceedings continue.

Use veterinary assessments, reliable records, and the evidence admitted in court to describe the operation accurately. Examine allegations involving tethering, strenuous conditioning, equipment, and drugs  used for combat wounds. Seek a proportionate sentence and any lawful conditions necessary to address demonstrated risks of recurrence.

Continue the pending prosecution fairly and investigate additional participants where credible evidence warrants it. Work with responsible agencies and qualified caregivers on suitable placement and treatment for the dogs. The lasting outcome should include meaningful accountability for established offenses and a real opportunity for the recovered animals to live safely beyond the alleged fighting operation.

Sincerely,
