Goal: Do not lift ban on hunting protected wolf species.
During the 1800s, the wolf reached extinction level in Germany. But committed conservation efforts helped this species make a comeback. Unfortunately, political and special interest pressures may very well send the German wolf back to a precarious brink.
The nation’s lower parliament recently approved a law that would lift Germany’s wolf hunting ban for several months of every year. Under the proposed law, wolves can be hunted regardless of their endangerment or protected status. While these wildlife can and do pose a threat to farm animals, conservations believe culling is not the answer. Instead, more funding and resources should be devoted to protecting at-risk herds via measures like fencing and dogs trained for herd protection.

Dear President Klöckner,
“Species conservation in Germany must not be sacrificed for the sake of symbolic political action.” Wildlife experts across Germany echo this sentiment expressed by an expert in wolves and wolf behavior. Ending a ban on hunting a protected species – a species that once went extinct in Germany – is not the message to send or the legacy to leave.
Non-lethal options do exist for curbing wolf attacks on farm herds, including more extensive fences and herd protection dogs. Invest strongly in these alternatives before deciding that the only way to save a life is to end a life.
