Stop Treating “Attack” Dogs as Power Symbols

Target: Baroness Hayman of Ullock, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, UK

Goal: Enact strict requirements for the ownership, breeding, and training of personal protection dogs to ensure public safety and animal welfare.

The rise of personal protection dogs in the UK poses serious risks to both public safety and animal welfare. These dogs, which are trained to bite and hold on command, are marketed as family pets but may be sold with little oversight or respect for their immense power. Incidents involving protection dogs are increasing, with a noticeable jump in complaints to animal welfare organizations. The lack of regulation in this market raises alarming questions about the responsibility of breeders and trainers while exposing the public to a situation that’s unsafe for both people and the animals involved.

Numerous high-profile individuals have purchased these protection dogs without fully understanding the potential hazards involved. However, this trend is not confined to the wealthy, and those lacking experience or knowledge about such animals are seeking out aggressive breeds. The current state of affairs not only endangers people but also places undue stress on dogs that are treated as mere tools rather than sentient beings deserving of proper care and consideration. Stories of dogs being trained using force or coercion have surfaced, raising serious ethical concerns about how these animals are raised and educated.

To protect both the public and these animals, urgent action is required. Enacting stringent regulations and strict licensing for dog ownership, breeding, and training of personal protection dogs is essential. This would not only ensure higher training standards and accountability but would also safeguard the welfare of the dogs involved. Such reforms are necessary to foster a safer environment for communities while promoting the humane treatment of animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Baroness Hayman,

The increasing popularity of personal protection dogs has highlighted significant risks to public safety and animal welfare that must be addressed. These dogs are being sold with insufficient oversight, often to owners who lack the necessary expertise or understanding of their powerful instincts. This alarming trend could lead to more serious incidents of dog attacks, which have risen sharply in recent years, as evidenced by the complaints received by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

It is concerning that many individuals are treating these protection dogs as status symbols rather than caring companions, often overlooking the responsibility their ownership entails. The training methods employed are inconsistent, and many buyers lack awareness of the potential dangers related to owning such animals. Irresponsible breeding and training practices are not only compromising the dogs’ well-being but also endangering the public.

To prevent further harm and ensure the welfare of both the public and these animals, strict regulations and licensing requirements for personal protection dog ownership, breeding, and training are imperative. The time has come to acknowledge and act upon these urgent issues to foster a safer community and promote responsible dog ownership.

Sincerely,
