Success: Toxic, Health-Endangering Fuel on Track to Be Banned

Target: Travis Nelson, Oregon State Representative

Goal: Support effort to prohibit use of leaded fuel at community racetracks.

This ForceChange petition highlighted an investigation into an Oregon racetrack that is reportedly endangering the public health of its local community. The Portland International Raceway came under fire for allowing the use of leaded fuel in its race cars. Leaded fuel is associated with a number of detrimental health effects, especially in young children, and it has been banned nationwide in most sectors. Local lawmakers have begun the process of addressing this risk.

An Oregon state representative of the communities in closest proximity to the racetrack sponsored a bill that has gained the support necessary for a likely successful vote. The bill proposes a ban on leaded fuel at racetracks in cities with population of at least 500,000. The proposed law would not only protect communities and kids around the Portland racetrack, but it would provide a needed safeguard for communities across the state.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Nelson,

When an investigation revealed that Portland’s children were very likely suffering cognitive issues because of leaded fuel, lawmakers could have looked the other way. Thank you for leading the charge in confronting and quite possibly rectifying an egregious public health threat. The proposed bill banning the use of leaded fuel at racetracks can set a standard not only for Oregon but for communities across the nation.

Because of its continued prominence in farm equipment and race cars, leaded fuel still poses a danger to many Americans. This bill has hopefully shone a spotlight and provided a path forward on this urgent issue.

Sincerely,
