Don’t Let Obsolete Sewage Systems Poison Lakes

Target: Commissioner Robert R. Scott, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services

Goal: Implement water quality improvement measures in the Lakes Region.

New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, a haven for both wildlife and people, is grappling with declining water quality. Agricultural runoff, outdated sewage systems, and industrial pollutants are wreaking havoc on this once-pristine area. The situation is critical and demands immediate, decisive action.

The Lakes Region is more than a collection of bodies of water; it’s a cornerstone of New Hampshire’s natural heritage. It serves as a habitat for countless species and offers recreational opportunities for residents and tourists alike. Moreover, it’s an economic engine for the state, supporting tourism, fishing, and boating industries.

Sign the petition to compel the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services to take immediate, effective action to enhance the water quality in the Lakes Region. Key actions should include the implementation of modern sewage treatment facilities, stricter agricultural runoff controls, and community education about responsible water use.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Robert R. Scott,

New Hampshire’s Lakes Region is in crisis. The water quality has plummeted, endangering both human health and the rich biodiversity that calls these lakes home. The evidence is clear: increased algal blooms, dwindling fish populations, and unsafe drinking water.

We call on you to act swiftly and decisively. A multi-faceted, actionable plan must be rolled out to restore the Lakes Region to its former glory. This plan should not only focus on modernizing sewage treatment and controlling agricultural runoff but also engage the community in sustainable water use practices.

The cost of inaction is too high. The Lakes Region is not just a scenic backdrop; it’s a vital part of New Hampshire’s economy and natural landscape.

We urge you to act with the immediacy this grave situation requires. Roll out measures that will not only rectify the current state but also ensure the long-term health of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.

Sincerely,
