Success: Planned Parenthood Defunding Blocked in Two States

Target: Susan Collins, Senator of Maine

Goal: Thank those who have stood by Planned Parenthood during its most recent legal battles.

The healthcare and rights of American women have once again been protected. The Supreme Court recently rejected Kansas and Louisiana’s appeals to strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood by flat-out refusing to hear their case. While the decision has been met with criticism and accusations of ducking from Justice Clarence Thomas as well and anti-abortion crusaders, it could not have been a more welcome one.

Planned Parenthood has been under attack by pro-life conservatives for years, under the assumption that the organization exists solely to profit from abortions. In truth, the organization stands for and provides valuable health care services such as cancer screenings and annual exams, which some women unfortunately do not have access to otherwise. While women should certainly have the right to abortion if they so choose, it does a great disservice to Planned Parenthood as a whole to accuse it, as well as its supporters, of caring about nothing else.

The Supreme Court’s decision was not them avoiding the issue, but doing the right thing by keeping the states’ Medicaid funds in place to support the organization. Many petitions, such as this one, have rallied against the defunding of Planned Parenthood for the past several years.

Kansas and Louisiana may only be two states, but the fact that their lower court rulings will keep Planned Parenthood funded and active is a step in the right direction. Sign this petition to thank Senator Susan Collins, a Republican, for her firm support of Planned Parenthood in the face of its legal battles and threats.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Collins,

Thank you for your continued support of Planned Parenthood throughout the organization’s many legal battles. Despite the criticisms launched at the Supreme Court’s decision to keep its funding in place, it is ultimately the right one as Planned Parenthood has come under far too many attacks within recent years. The organization is often accused of profiting off abortion, but in truth, it provides many vital health care services to women in need.

The Court’s refusal to hear these two states’ wishes to divert Medicaid funds was a bold and welcome choice that left Planned Parenthood’s protection intact, and it is much appreciated by those who rely on the organization for health care they normally could not afford. We appreciate your efforts to stand by those in need of quality affordable medical care for women.

Sincerely,
