Stop Trump’s Attack on Planned Parenthood

Target: Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Do not allow the Trump administration to exclude Planned Parenthood from federal programs.

Donald Trump’s budget proposal for 2018 includes an unprecedented attack on women’s healthcare, in the form of banning Planned Parenthood from participating in any federally funded program, such as Department of Health and Human Services programs.

Dawn Laguens, the executive VP of Planned Parenthood, said of the budget, “It singles out Planned Parenthood [and] guts programs designed to help women and their families put food on the table, get the medical care they need and make ends meet. Gimmicks and misdirection cannot cover up a deadly agenda that would hurt women and prevent access to basic healthcare in the U.S. and across the globe.”

This is just the latest in a long series of Republican attacks on Planned Parenthood, which provides access to vital reproductive and preventative healthcare for women and men all over the United States, especially low-income individuals and those who live in rural areas. Attempts to decrease or altogether eliminate Planned Parenthood funding stem from anti-abortion sentiments that are often religious in nature, despite the realities of the separation of church and state and the fact that abortion is a legal procedure.

Add your name to the petition below to demand that Congress not allow this attack on reproductive healthcare.

Dear Senator McConnell,

Donald Trump recently sent Congress his budget proposal for 2018. The budget aims to exclude Planned Parenthood from participating in any federally funded programs. This is a targeted and shameful attack on an organization that provides vital reproductive and preventative healthcare to women all over the United States.

Republican attempts to defund and limit access to Planned Parenthood need to come to an end. It is incredibly clear that these attempts are motivated by anti-abortion sentiments, but women are legally granted the right to choose to have an abortion thanks to a decades-old Supreme Court ruling. Furthermore, while some Planned Parenthood facilities to perform abortion procedures, the organization focuses primarily on providing preventative healthcare services, including cancer screenings and breast exams.

I ask that you work in Congress to ensure that this part of Donald Trump’s budget proposal does not become a reality. Planned Parenthood is an incredibly important organization for millions of American women. The federal government should be working to improve the quality of American lives, not endangering the health and threatening the bodily autonomy of its citizens.

Planned Parenthood does not actually have the legal right to receive federal funding. Federal law prohibits government money for abortion, except in cases of rape or incest, or to save a mother’s life. This is according to the Hyde Amendment, passed in 1976.
As well, in the fiscal year 2016, Planned Parenthood’s excess revenue was $77.5 million, and their net assets are over 1.5 billion. What right do they have to insist on federal funding – taxpayers money – when they have such financial assets themselves?
Abortion is not “reproductive healthcare”. In abortion, a baby is killed. How is that “healthcare”?
Many taxpayers do not want their money used to pay for the killing of an innocent child.
A person doesn’t have to be religious to know that abortion is killing. It’s a matter of being willing to open our eyes, stop deluding ourselves, and seeing abortion for what it really is.

    stop being sexist!

    • I am definitely not sexist. Some people who are against abortion are certainly sexist, that is true. But I am not sexist. I am focusing on the crux of the matter, which is that abortion is the killing – or murder – of a child.
Yes women have the right to do what they want with their own bodies. But when they are pregnant, (as I’ve said before) there are 2 bodies involved, not just 1. Two lives, two people – temporarily in one. So, does the mother have the right over the baby – to choose to kill him or her? Or does the baby have a right to live, just as the mother does? I myself think the baby has a right to live as well.
