Goal: Commend federal judge for striking down last remaining state ban on same-sex adoption.
A federal judge has struck down Mississippi’s ban on same-sex adoption, deeming the law unconstitutional. Mississippi was the only remaining state in the U.S. that didn’t allow same-sex couples to adopt children. This is a major human rights victory, and Judge Daniel P. Jordan III should be commended for protecting the constitutional rights of all gay and lesbian parents.
Mississippi’s ban on same-sex adoption had been in place since 2000, and represented close-minded, homophobic rhetoric. Fortunately, Judge Jordan determined that this old law violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution and could no longer be left in place. Advocacy groups and writers at ForceChange have been advocating for equal rights for same-sex couples in issues such as adoption and marriage for years, with many positive changes occurring slowly across the U.S. The overturning of this final ban on same-sex adoption was long overdue, and represents a huge success.
It is the right of all couples, regardless of whether they are same-sex or opposite-sex, to be able to choose whether or not to raise a family. While there is still much discrimination against same-sex couples in the U.S., this recent decision by Judge Jordan is an important step in the right direction, protecting the legal rights of these couples. Same-sex couples have been the target of discrimination and marginalization for years in the U.S. It has been a slow process gaining equal rights for gay and lesbian couples, but every step in the right direction is to be recognized and celebrated. Thanks to your recent decision, there are no longer any states where same-sex couples cannot apply to adopt children together.
