Poisoned Bait Left in Public Square Kills 23 Animals Overnight: Seek Justice

Target: Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, India

Goal: Identify and prosecute whoever is responsible for deliberately leaving poisoned food in a public area that killed 12 stray dogs, three cats, and eight birds.

Dogs, cats, and birds all died within hours of each other near Shillong’s Circuit House, turning a public space into a scene of mass animal death and prompting urgent calls for justice. Authorities began investigating after numerous animals were found convulsing near the Circuit House after eating what investigators suspect was contaminated food. The confirmed death toll has climbed to 12 stray dogs, three cats, and eight birds, after one critically injured dog died during veterinary treatment. A criminal case has been registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. No suspect has been identified, and the investigation remains open. Animal welfare advocates have also raised concern that recovered food samples were not immediately preserved or sent for forensic testing, a lapse they say may have cost investigators critical leads. Activists have since offered rewards for information or CCTV footage that could help identify the person or people responsible.

Whoever is behind this, the facts describe an act that harmed an entire community of animals, not a single victim. If the evidence ultimately shows the poison was left intentionally, whoever did it should face every lawful consequence. Thorough forensic work, proper evidence preservation, and decisive enforcement are essential — both to close this case and to prevent it from happening again.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear SP Syiem,

Twenty-three animals are dead after apparently consuming poisoned food left in a public area. Investigators continue working to identify who prepared and distributed the toxic bait. Whoever is ultimately identified should be evaluated through comprehensive forensic analysis, witness interviews, CCTV review, and every other available investigative resource — and any resulting allegations of guilt remain subject to due process.

Please ensure this investigation receives the highest priority and that, if the evidence identifies a suspect, that person is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. A crime that claimed the lives of so many defenseless animals deserves a thorough investigation and real accountability.

Sincerely,
