When an Air India plane crashed and killed 260 people, investigators were able to examine critical evidence that could provide needed answers, including cockpit recordings. Because of the available data, a full report on the crash is expected in the coming weeks. But in another tragic airline incident, resolution for grieving families is far away.
A Missouri plane that was carrying 11 skydivers crashed shortly after takeoff, killing everyone on board. Preliminary investigations into the plane’s mechanics and the flight crew have yielded nothing suspect. But key recording devices were entirely absent from the investigation because flights focused on the business of parachute jumping are not required to carry such devices. Moreover, such flights are also not mandated to possess the following: operating certificates or specifications issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), nor maintenance and training approved by the agency.

Dear Administrator Bedford,
The tragic crash in Butler, Missouri that took the lives of 12 people still has no clear – or even vague – cause, by the National Transportation Safety Board’s own admission. While this agency has done its due diligence in investigating all available evidence, it does not have access to the crucial data that could solve the mystery and bring peace to families left behind. Data recorders have proven instrumental in understanding prior crashes, so why are aircraft central to business operations like skydiving not mandated to carry these crucial recorders onboard? And why are so many guidelines central to FAA-approved aircraft (such as operating certification and training) seemingly absent for operators of these aircraft?
Consumers should not have to worry that their recreational ventures will ultimately end their lives because proper safeguards were never implemented. Correct these deadly deficiencies before the next unsolved mystery unfolds for the world to see.
