End Funding for Experiments Reportedly Causing Severe Suffering and Death to Animals at UMass Chan Medical School

Target: Jayanta “Jay” Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health

Goal: Stop the funding of cruel and inhumane experiments on animals at UMass Chan Medical School, including those that cause severe suffering and death.

Revelations surrounding the animal experimentation allegedly conducted by Heather Gray-Edwards at UMass Chan Medical School are deeply disturbing and warrant immediate attention. Under her supervision, animals such as sheep, calves, and cats are allegedly subjected to extreme cruelty, suffering from severe neurological diseases and enduring invasive procedures without adequate pain relief. These heinous practices reportedly include jamming needles into the spines and brains of these innocent creatures, leading to agonizing conditions and ultimately death.

The details of the horrors seemingly inflicted upon these animals are shocking. For example, calves reportedly to develop Maple Syrup Urine Disease experience severe weakness, seizures, and brain damage within days of birth, often with no relief from the suffering. Additionally, sheep reportedly undergo torturous invasive surgeries and are observed as they deteriorate from a genetic disease, separated from their herd and scared. The treatment of cats is equally horrifying, as they allegedly endure skull surgeries and continuous painful procedures before being killed, adding to a record of appalling animal welfare violations at this institution.

It is imperative to act swiftly to end the funding of such ethically reprehensible practices. UMass Chan Medical School has a long history of apparently failing to abide by basic animal welfare standards, with numerous violations reported. Continuing to fund such experiments not only perpetuates suffering but also undermines the credibility of scientific research. The demand is clear: the National Institutes of Health must halt all funding to Gray-Edwards’ experiments and implement a shift towards more humane and scientifically valid research methods that do not involve the suffering of animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Bhattacharya,

We are writing to bring attention to the alarming animal welfare violations reportedly occurring at UMass Chan Medical School under the supervision of Heather Gray-Edwards. Reports indicate that animals subjected to her experiments endure unimaginable suffering, with severe treatments including spinal and brain injections. Calves bred for neurodegenerative diseases reportedly face intense weakness and seizures, often killed shortly after birth due to unattainable complications. It is both heartbreaking and unacceptable that these innocent beings are seemingly turned into subjects of cruel experimentation devoid of pain relief.

Furthermore, the reported practices extend beyond calves to sheep and cats, and include animals experiencing progressive deterioration in their health through invasive surgeries and painful procedures. In one instance, cats appear to be bred specifically to suffer from debilitating muscle deterioration and then face destructive surgeries before ultimately being killed. Such actions suggest a complete disregard for animal welfare and ethical scientific practices.

Given this appalling record, it is essential for the National Institutes of Health to act decisively. Funding for these experiments must be halted immediately to prevent further suffering and to encourage a shift towards humane alternatives in research. We urge you to take action to protect these animals and evaluate more ethical research practices moving forward.

Sincerely,
