Target: Pam Bondi, U.S. Attorney General
Goal: Do not enact gun ownership ban targeting only transgender Americans.
An average of 300-plus mass shootings have occurred in eight months’ time in the United States. Each event brings about calls for action, which are typically met with calls for “thoughts and prayers.” The Trump administration seems ready to at last take action on gun control — but only against one of their favorite scapegoats: transgender Americans. Reports have emerged that the Department of Justice is exploring ways to ban anyone who identifies as transgender from owning a gun. The Second Amendment seemingly only matters if one is the right gender identity.
This latest controversial distraction arose because of claims that an accused Minneapolis mass shooter who opened fire on a Catholic school may have identified as transgender. Despite statistics consistently indicating that the majority of mass shooters are younger white men, this one potential case apparently merits discriminatory action against an entire group that has already long been demonized. Adding to the hypocrisy is the claim that transgender Americans should be stripped of gun ownership because they are “mentally ill.” Time after time, legislative efforts to limit firearm access for people with actual diagnosed mental illnesses and histories of violence have been defeated by the very same politicians who have suddenly found their advocacy for gun control.

PETITION LETTER:
Dear Attorney General Bondi,
How exactly does the Second Amendment work in the halls of the U.S. Department of Justice? Does it only apply to individuals favored by the current administration? Is it to be used as a weapon against the latest convenient target for demonization and distraction? If it indeed has limits, as suggested by a proposed gun ban aimed toward transgender Americans (who have committed less than one percent of mass shootings), then how about limiting the access of the white men who currently overrepresent by a large margin the typical profile of a mass shooter? What about the access of domestic abusers, people diagnosed with mental disorders that leave them inclined to violence, or the many other subgroups gun advocate politicians have consistently protected from “right to bear arms” restrictions?
You cannot have it both ways. Either make a sincere and real effort at gun control or stop using the deaths of children as fuel for a political agenda and a campaign of hate.
Sincerely,
