Dog Reportedly Found in Trash as Dozens Kept in Filthy Cages: Demand Maximum Penalties

Target: Brian Mason, District Attorney for Adams and Broomfield Counties, Colorado.

Goal: Seek the maximum lawful penalties, a long-term animal-ownership ban, and full restitution in the case where a dog was reportedly found dead in a trash can and more than 30 dogs and other animals were allegedly confined in squalid, cramped cages.

According to law enforcement reports, officers discovered three young children and roughly 35 animals living in “deplorable conditions,” with 31 dogs and puppies reportedly crammed into small cages in a garage. Two cats and two guinea pigs were also reportedly seized, and a dog’s body was apparently found in a trash can outside. These details, as reported, paint a picture of extreme distress and neglect that no animal—or child—should endure.

Officials further indicated the case began after an individual was accused of performing an unlicensed veterinary procedure on a dog that allegedly died as a result. While every accused person is entitled to due process, the documented scene—reportedly malnourished dogs, filthy quarters, and the discovery of a deceased dog—demands a vigorous, transparent response that prioritizes animal welfare and community safety.

Appropriate accountability is essential to deter future cruelty. This case deserves a response that signals zero tolerance for apparent systemic neglect. Sign below to demand prosecutors pursue all applicable charges and, upon conviction, request penalties that fit the alleged suffering: meaningful jail time where warranted, strict probation terms, restitution for veterinary and shelter costs, mandatory counseling, and a lengthy prohibition on owning or keeping animals.

PETITION LETTER:

District Attorney Mason,

As reported by local authorities, officers encountered a harrowing scene involving three children and approximately 35 animals in deplorable conditions, including 31 dogs and puppies reportedly confined in cramped garage cages. A dog’s body was apparently found in a trash can, and the case purportedly began with an unlicensed veterinary procedure that resulted in a dog’s death. These allegations, if proven, reflect profound cruelty and disregard for life.

We respectfully urge your office to pursue all applicable felony and misdemeanor counts to the fullest extent permitted by law. Where the evidence supports it, please seek sentences that include meaningful incarceration or strict alternative sanctions, substantial fines, mandatory counseling, and a lengthy or lifetime prohibition on animal ownership. We also ask that you request full restitution to cover the animals’ care, along with compliance monitoring to prevent future harm.

Swift, serious action in this matter will protect vulnerable animals, reinforce community trust, and deter others from engaging in similar conduct. Thank you for treating this case with the urgency and gravity it warrants.

Sincerely,
