Dog Abandoned in Crate With Heartbreaking Note and Overgrown Claws Deserves Justice

Target: Serena Kennedy, Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, Merseyside, England

Goal: Identify and capture the person who abandoned “Spud” in a crate and left him with painful, overgrown claws.

A young Staffordshire bull terrier mix nicknamed “Spud” was discovered confined in a crate at a field entrance alongside a handwritten letter. The note admitted the dog had not been outside for a year and “wouldn’t walk on a lead or go downstairs.” When rescuers and veterinary staff examined him, they found long claws grown into his pads, fur loss, and a low body condition—signs consistent with prolonged neglect and lack of exercise.

The living creature at the center of this case was described as gentle and eager for affection even while seemingly suffering. He was found in poor condition, with red and sore pads likely aggravated by urine staining and overgrown nails pressing into the flesh. Such details paint a distressing picture of an animal who  endured extended hardship behind closed doors.

This case demands a swift, thorough investigation to determine who is responsible and to ensure meaningful accountability under the law. Animals depend on people for basic care, and abandonment and neglect should carry serious consequences. Sign below to demand authorities prioritize identifying the individual involved so that charges and justice can be pursued.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Constable Kennedy,

We are writing regarding reports that a young dog known as “Spud” was found confined in a crate with a handwritten note stating he had not been outside for a year. Veterinary observations documented painful, overgrown claws growing into his pads, fur loss, and a low body condition—details consistent with prolonged neglect.

These described circumstances are deeply troubling. A dog left in a crate, under-exercised to the point that nails grow into pads, evokes preventable pain and suffering. The public relies on law enforcement to treat such matters with urgency so that vulnerable animals are protected and those responsible are held to account.

We respectfully urge Merseyside Police to pursue every available lead—review nearby CCTV, canvass the area, encourage tips, and coordinate closely with animal welfare professionals—to identify a suspect. Taking strong action here will help deter future cruelty and signal that abandonment and neglect will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

I believe animal abusers should have the same thing done to them as they did to the animals they abused

  2. I have concerns about the whole situation. Obviously the condition of the dog is the primary issue. But who was behind this? An elderly person who maybe should not have had the dog in the first place? It seems like they wanted the dog to be found. Prosecuting may result in far worse fates for other animals in the future, because people become afraid to even try and do the right thing (eventually). Before calling for prosecution, maybe we should find out about the situation, and also encourage people to ask for help in caring for an animal the minute they need it, before it gets to this point.

    • Shut up you bleeding heart, how can you have even the slightest concern for the abomination who mistreated this poor soul. No elderly person has a staffie for a start, they are a trophy dog for thugs and only a monster could be responsible for such heinous evil cruelty. So mind your own business

Little Spud endured a torturous long year or longer?
But you make valid points Robert. However, this person should not have let this little dog suffer for that length of time!!!!! If this person can walk or talk and see they should have gotten assistance much much much sooner!!!!

Please investigate fully and depending on the results please let the consequences match the cruelty.

Please find Spud a truly happy forever home. HE TRULY DESERVES IT!!!!

  4. The authorities have got to push these cases to the fullest extent possible if that’s not good enough start fixing the weak broken system that has thousands of animals paying a very high price for lack of caring inefficiency just plain not giving a damn! We sign these petitions daily why? This should never be allowed to happen ever period hire more people get the job done for these countless suffering slowly dying animals that look to humans for basic needs which they are obviously being denied! This is obviously wrong on every level possible and goes without saying be kind to animals don’t make them suffer for stupidity laziness not caring do whats right enough already!

  5. Agree all comments,Do the same to them . Justice now should be strict laws to own animals and yearly checks and on a register. To much of this happening. Also must be desexed , microchiped, people should be banned owning animals.

This is a horrendous case of neglect and abuse…I cannot imagine how poor Spud must have suffered for at least a year in this condition! May this heartless cruel person(s) be brought to justice and may Spud have a second chance at life with a loving family. Laws are far too lenient against these perpetrators and as someone mentioned, have this done to them…lock them in a crate for months and months and see how they like it!

  7. Unfortunately this is the UK and we do not have adequate animal protection here at all the fact it is Liverpool might work in the dogs favour as there are some fairly decent folk live there but I don’t hold out much hope that the filth who did this will ever be punished as our laws against such crimes may be good but our judiciary are totally useless much the same as the dog shelters.

  8. Absolutely No Tolerance Towards Animal ABUSERS n Cruelty. An eye for an eye fits this crime n should be the punishment. Paws Matter
