End Destructive, Unhealthy Salmon Farming

Target: Brooke Rollins, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Goal: Hold the salmon farming industry accountable for misleading dietary guidelines and environmental degradation.

The controversy surrounding farmed salmon escalates as new research reveals that the nutritional benefits once associated with this widely consumed fish are waning due to drastic changes in its diet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s dietary guidelines, which recommend a high intake of salmon for omega-3 fatty acids, may be based on outdated information. Recent findings note a significant decline in omega-3 levels in farmed salmon, raising concerns about public health and the accuracy of government recommendations that continue to promote consumption without acknowledging these critical shifts.

Furthermore, the dietary transition of farmed salmon from a natural diet of smaller fish to one that now heavily relies on land-based crops, such as soy and canola, not only compromises the nutritional value of the fish but also raises serious environmental alarms. Over-exploitation of smaller fish species has been documented, leading to degraded ecosystems and threatening wild salmon populations. Soy farming has also contributed to widespread deforestation, particularly in the Amazon rainforest, escalating the ongoing crisis in both marine and terrestrial environments.

To prevent further misleading dietary advice and environmental degradation, accountability measures must be taken against anyone involved in shaping and promoting outdated and inaccurate agricultural guidelines.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Rollins,

The consumption of farmed salmon has surged worldwide, driven in part by dietary recommendations suggesting its consumption as a healthy source of omega-3 fatty acids. However, recent research from your own agency indicates that the omega-3 levels in farmed salmon have dropped significantly. Such an alarming decline raises concerns about the validity of ongoing dietary guidelines and the potential misinformation consumers may be receiving about their health.

Additionally, the shift in the dietary composition of farmed salmon—now primarily reliant on land-based crops—has led to detrimental impacts on marine ecosystems and significant greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental consequences of this practice are profound and include damaging effects on wild fish populations and illegal deforestation in critical areas like the Amazon rainforest. This dual exploitation of terrestrial and marine resources must not be overlooked.

Sincerely,
