The grand jury indictment handed down to 48 individuals allegedly involved in a New Jersey cockfighting ring highlights the ongoing danger posed by this cruel “sport.” The bloody spectacle ends in severe injury or death for at least one of the roosters involved in each “match.” A North Carolina man stands accused of inflicting this cruelty upon multiple roosters.
A welfare check involving chickens first brought authorities to the residence of Rigoberto Vasquez-Ferrer. Once police arrived on-scene, they reportedly found the man cutting off a rooster’s wattle and comb. Upon further investigation of the property, they also uncovered alleged “cockfighting paraphernalia.” Vicious devices commonly used in cockfighting include knives and metal spurs.

Cockfighting may be an ancient “sport,” but it represents the worst of human impulses. These violent exhibitions maim and brutally kill innocent animals for entertainment and profit.
